Most medinillas are native to the Philippines. These are epiphytic plants, meaning they would normally growing on logs or in trees, similar to orchids. We generally grow ours in a well draining peat based mix, since medinillas don't like to sit too wet. Orchid bark is often a nice addition to the soil mix, and a time released fertilizer a couple times a year keeps them healthy and blooming. These plants often bloom several times a year and put on a beautiful display, usually blooming at every tip. They display best in hanging baskets so that the flowers can hang down. King Boudewijn of Belgium was a big devotee of Medinilla. He grew them in the royal conservatories and they were depicted on the bank note of 10,000 Belgian francs.
